Overview

Nestled in Reservoir, Victoria, Poroia Fish and Chips stands out as a beloved fast food destination for those craving a classic Aussie comfort meal. Situated at 755A Gilbert Rd, this spot combines tradition with consistency, offering iconic fish and chips crafted with a dedication that’s evident from the first bite.

The core of Poroia’s appeal lies in its hand-battered fish, freshly prepared before frying to achieve a satisfyingly crispy texture. Several patrons highlight the freshness and lightness of the batter, with the fish itself remaining tender and full-flavored beneath the golden crust. This attention to detail elevates what could have been ordinary fast food into something genuinely enjoyable.

Beyond the signature fish and chips, the menu enriches the experience with options like combo packs—including "Pack A," "Pack B," and "The Burger Pack"—which cater to diverse appetites and preferences. The presence of chicken and lamb souvlaki adds variation, while sides such as scallops, potato cakes, and the homemade hamburger maintain the same high standard. For those with a sweet tooth, indulgent desserts like the fried large Mars Bar and pineapple fritters provide a nostalgic finish.

The atmosphere at Poroia is friendly and welcoming, reflecting the kindness of the owners who actively engage with their community. This warmth complements the efficient, no-fuss space ideal for a quick bite or casual gathering. Customers appreciate the combination of genuine flavors and approachable prices, reinforcing Poroia’s reputation as a go-to local spot.

Regulars appreciate the value and taste, noting that portions are generous and never compromised by excess grease. Though there was an isolated comment about a greasy batch, the overall consensus praises its fresh oil and consistently crispy result. It’s clear that Poroia’s main audience ranges from busy locals seeking a reliable lunch to families after a satisfying meal in a relaxed setting.

In summary, Poroia Fish and Chips strikes a fine balance between tradition and accessibility. Its location makes it a convenient stop for Reservoir residents, while the carefully prepared menu items ensure it remains a standout choice in a competitive fast food scene.

Delicious fish and chips, crispy and yummy. Tasty, not greasy, oil was fresh. Batter on point. Fish delicious. Burger delicious. Potato cakes delicious. Owners running the store were super duper friendly. Glad we went back. ------------- Update to this review September 2022: Just moved in round the corner and thought we'd give our new local a try. Seemed like a nice place and people, but, ooof, some of the greasiest fish and chips we've had in a looong time. Somehow they were still crunchy whilst being mega greasy which was the only saving grace. Will give them one more go at some point to see if they were just having an off day, and update this review with the results.

Genuinely delicious fish and chips. Everything is battered by hand right before frying. Super crispy chips, crunchy potato cakes, and fresh fish. Hamburger with the lot only $9.50 too. Can’t go wrong!

Delicious battered fish, scallops and potato cakes. Crispy chips and my favorite, handmade hamburger in batter. I stop here whenever there is an empty parking spot in front.

Excellent choice for potato cake enthusiasts. Staff are friendly and quick. They also tend to add an extra potato cake or two as a bonus.
